The Natural Choice
Eastern White Cedar
Fraser Wood Siding has been one of North America’s foremost suppliers of quality wood siding and cedar shingles for more than 15 years. And since the very beginning, Fraser Wood Siding has been proud to offer the Eastern White Cedar shingle as part of its product line. This cedar is found in all eastern Canadian provinces and extends westerly to eastern Manitoba. It is sometimes referred to as eastern cedar, northern white cedar or arborvitae (tree of life)..
While it occasionally reaches a height of 80 feet and a diameter at breast-height of 3 feet, it is generally a comparatively small tree about one foot in diameter and 45 feet in height. It is usually found in low swampy ground, but also grows in limestone ridges with shallow soil. The wood has a pleasant odor and is very lightweight once kiln dried. The heartwood is a light brown and the sapwood is very light in color. It is comparatively soft, has a fine and even texture and splits readily. These characteristics, combined with Eastern White Cedar’s natural insulation properties make shingles made from this versatile wood a preferred material for outdoor applications.
